It all started when…

From October 2017 to June 2018 a team of artists and geologists led by Kate Kendall and Jerry Kendall, working in communication with the Buffalo Bayou Partnership and the University of Houston Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, collected 12 sand peels from sediment deposits left by Hurricane Harvey in Buffalo Bayou Park (Plates 1-12).

Over the next 9 months Kate and Jerry worked to archive the 12 sand peels as Sand Peel Sculptures.

The Sand Peel Sculptures below are organized into 3 phases of Harvey archived in the sand peels.

  1.      Flood Phase

  2.      Adjustment

    • Early Adjustment (Plate 1)

    • Middle Adjustment (Plates 3-7)

    • Late Adjustment (Plates 8-12)

  3. Recovery (Plate 12)

In October 2019 another sand peel was collected below the Jamail Skate Park which captures Harvey and another large storm deposit from Hurricane Imelda.

In total 13 Sand Peel Sculptures have been created from Buffalo Bayou Park.
